Disaster Planning Is Critical, But Pick A Reasonable Disaster

Bruce Schneier wrote in a recent Wired magazine commentary,

“The key <to disaster planning> is preparedness. Much more important than planning, preparedness is about setting up social structures so that people fall into doing something sensible when things go wrong. Think of all the wasted effort — and even more wasted desire — to do something after Katrina because there was no way for most people to help. Preparedness is about getting people to react when there’s a crisis. It’s something the military trains its soldiers for.”

Bruce makes a very good point. Beyond attempting to stock pile food and other supplies, whether the onus is on companies, governments, or individuals, we must begin to approach problems more effectively. If we, particularly in the West, do not understand how to react we will find ourselves in serious trouble in the face of a disaster, big or small.
